How To Pick The Best Rotary Laser Level

There so many construction lasers to choose from these days. It makes it very difficult to choose the right rotary laser level for your specific needs. This article will differentiate between normal laser level vs. rotary laser level. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of rotary laser levels.

What is a Rotary Laser Level?

Laser levels have been used in surveying and construction since the 1970s. In simple terms, a normal laser level consists of a rotating laser beam projector fixed at the top of the tripod. It's a control tool that uses a fixed red or green beam in a plane about the horizontal and vertical axis.

The accuracy of a normal laser level is based on the type and proper set up. This makes it crucial to choose the perfect rotary laser level for your project.

From its original concept of spinning-mirror design laser plane in the 70s. The technology of the laser level has advanced a lot to make the job easier and more accurate.

A rotary laser level is a more advanced laser level. Compared to normal laser levels, a rotary level spins the beam of light very fast. A rotary level gives the effect of a complete 360 degree horizontal or vertical plane.

This enables the laser level to illuminate a horizontal plane instead of a fixed-line.

There are so many models of laser levels available on the market today. This makes it all the more confusing to choose the right rotary laser level.

What to consider when buying a Rotary Laser Level

What are the practical applications for a rotary laser level?

Indoor construction projects:

Rotary laser levels are an excellent tool for indoor construction projects. It shoots a 360-degree horizontal or vertical beam around a room.

Outdoor construction projects:

Excavation, digging down, or building up are times you'll use a rotary laser level.

There are manually-leveling systems that are using a mounted bubble level.

  • Electronically self-leveling with the pendulum leveling system.
  • The automatically self-leveling system that uses electronics and gears for finding level.

How to set up a rotary laser level?

The first step is to mount the rotary laser level on the tripod. Make sure the rotary laser level is screwed in tight on the laser level tripod! You don't want it falling off when you are moving your whole setup around. It can ruin the calibration of your device or, worse, damage it beyond repair.

Next, you'll pair a laser receiver device with your laser level to find the true level point.

You will find a little bracket on your laser receiver device to loosen or tighten it that goes on the grade rod. You can set up your laser detector on a measuring stick at a specific height as you move around with your grade rod to find a level. Your laser receiver will show you a little upward or downward arrow. The arrows tell you whether you need to go up or go down to find the perfect level. The rotary laser level will also make a beeping noise when you get the correct level. So you won't have to keep looking at the display screen.

Depending on the laser level model, you can find laser levels that mount directly onto your tripod without screws.

How to operate a rotary laser

Setting up your laser level tripod:

1. Start with the best possible level surface

Find the nearest location as flat as possible to mount your laser level. If the terrain doesn't allow this, adjust the legs of your laser level tripod accordingly. The adjustable legs of the tripod will enable you to get the best possible level.

The most important thing to remember is to try to get it as stable as possible.

2. Find an ideal location that won't block the signals

A rotary laser depends on shooting a laser out and allowing the receiver to interact with that laser. A rotary laser shoots a 360-degree laser beam around it. Make sure nothing gets in the way when receiving a signal. Make sure the ground is not too soft or slippery like tiles as the tripod may slide.

3. Trust the device to self-level

As soon as you turn on the rotary laser, it will start to calibrate and self-balance. Give it a minute to level itself. Your job is to get the best possible level for the tripod and let it take over after turning it on.

4. Don't spend time adjusting the rotary laser device

Remember, when you have set it up correctly, and the rotary laser level has self leveled itself. Your job is to read the numbers on the laser receiver and pay attention to the beeping noise. Please don't stare at the rotary laser device after it's started. The laser beams can harm your vision. Better yet, wear a safety glass or specialized goggles to keep your eyes safe.
